The Nation and The Sales Development Company Partner to Increase Ad Revenue
The Sales Development Company, Inc., with offices in Tucson, Chicago and Upper Montclair, NJ, has signed a two-year contract with The Nation to provide exclusive advertising sales representation to national advertisers in several categories, including movies, alcoholic beverages and automotive. The Sales Development Company was formed in 2003 by former Tribune VP and New York Times Group Director, Susan Tarrence. The firm offers sales representation and consulting services.
Ellen Bollinger, V.P., Advertising, of The Nation, said, “Tarrence’s reputation in the advertising world is stellar. This arrangement brings together our powerful magazine and a winning ad sales team to convert our spectacular growth in circulation into increased national ad revenue. We are delighted to be partnering with The Sales Development Company.”
“Selling for The Nation during a time of such intense political debate is a professional and personal pleasure,” said Tarrence. “I know advertisers and agencies will recognize that The Nation’s audience is not only influential, affluent and well-educated – they are extraordinarily involved with this magazine. That makes for the best possible ad environment. I think advertising decision-makers will respond very positively once the story is shared.”
The country’s largest Journal of Opinion, with more than 335,000 influential readers nationwide, The Nation is a red hot advertising marketplace. The magazine’s slogan says it all… “Nobody Owns The Nation. That’s Why So Many Somebodies Read It.” Advertising campaigns in print, on radio and TV are adding 1,500 new subscribers weekly.
Established by abolitionists in 1865, The Nation has long been regarded as one of the country's definitive journalistic voices. For more than 135 years of writing on politics, culture, books and the arts, The Nation has remained true to its original commitment to be the critical, independent voice in American journalism. James Baldwin, Ralph Nader and Hunter Thompson published their first pieces in The Nation. Other contributors have included Martin Luther King Jr., Albert Einstein, Eleanor Roosevelt, Emma Goldman and Jean-Paul Sartre. The Nation has a proud literary history as well, having published the work of W.H. Auden, Langston Hughes, Sylvia Plath, Henry James, Willa Cather, Thomas Mann and hundreds of other major writers.
National advertisers have included HBO, BMW, Sony Music, Time Warner Video, Atkins Diet, The Organic Consumers Organization, PaxWorld Funds, Citizens Funds, Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps, Tweezerman, BookSpan, C-Span and even Fox News.
